netEvidence survey finds 25 per cent surge in business internet traffic during Olympics

Dec 03, 2012 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Internet traffic amongst businesses during the Olympics increased by an average of 25 per cent, according to new research by netEvidence. The study also found that 30 per cent of organisations pushed their internet circuits to full capacity during the Games, with the highest jump of 150 per cent recorded by a London-based executive recruitment firm.

Richard Thomas, CEO of netEvidence says: "It's inevitable that traffic will increase during planned sporting events like the Olympics. However, these leaps are dramatic, especially when you consider that most organisations will upgrade internet circuits when peaks hit around 70 per cent. The 25 per cent average uplift is significant and would put unprepared networks under considerable strain, with users experiencing slower performance of key business applications. A 150 per cent increase would almost certainly put most business operations in jeopardy." The study measured the internet traffic of 440 organisations during the second busiest week of the Olympics (w/c 5 August 2012), comparing this with the week after the event (w/c 12 August 2012). The organisations included in the study use netEvidence's Highlight SaaS-based service to ensure they have full visibility into the performance of all critical business services delivered via their networks and applications.

To ensure that essential business applications are given priority over general internet traffic and to guarantee latency-sensitive services such as VoIP and video are not disrupted, many organisations set up Classes of Services (CoS). This ensures low priority internet surfing is dropped first if there is congestion. With netEvidence's Highlight service, users are able to have full visibility into usage levels within each Class of Service.

They can then configure their usage for the most cost effective and efficient performance.

Richard adds: "We see lots of examples where organisations start to use Highlight and suddenly find unexpected traffic patterns or Classes of Service that are hardly being used; they thought they knew how their business was running until Highlight gave them the full picture." Highlight's visual display uses a traffic light system, showing green when all applications are working well and red when performance is likely to be impacted. Utilising 70 per cent of the network represents the danger area and denotes that the service is degraded to the point that the end customers are being impacted. Users of Highlight can then drill down to identify what is happening and which locations, and therefore customers, are affected.
