SKYPE News - Skype Offers One Month of Unlimited Free International Calling
By Brittany Walters-Bearden, TMCnet Contributor
The last time you tried to make a call to somewhere like South Africa, you probably cringed. In an effort to raise awareness about its international calling rates and get people using its calling function, Skype (News - Alert) decided to offer a deal potential users can’t refuse.
Skype recently launched a promotion for its international calling plans allowing people a month of unlimited calls. The offer was absolutely free and covered calls to landlines and mobile phones around the world. The only catch to the offer? It was only offered for one day, so users had to act quickly.
Forty percent of the calls made on Skype are video chats, so this new promotion will help them to increase their total calls made to landlines and mobile phones.
Skype’s video and calling service already has devoted legions, allowing users to make video calls, whether they’re trying to keep in touch with grandparents across the country or their mother overseas, and their calling function allows users to connect with phones instead of with computers.
It is so popular that at the beginning of 2012, it had 31 million registered users; the average Skype user uses more than 100 minutes of time on Skype per month with the average of those calls is 27 minutes.
Since its conception, there have been more than 560 million people who at least tried Skype in some way.
With the design of a Skype application for iPhones in 2011, the company was able to set a record for 27 million simultaneous online users. That record has been broken numerous times with the latest coming on March 5, 2012, when the record was broken with 36 million simultaneous online users.
If these numbers weren’t already impressive, its recent promotion, allowing users to make one month of free phone calls, will undoubtedly garner Skype many more new users, keeping it at the top, even as other calling services enter the market and compete for a slice of the video chatting and international calling pie.
