SKYPE News - Got Two Billion Minutes? Skype Does
By Nicole Spector, Contributing Writer
Mega communications company Skype (News - Alert) can now join the time-sinking ranks of sleep, work, vacation, and time in the bathroom. The company announced today that collectively, its users are spending more than two billion minutes a day connecting via Skype for video chat.
That's enough time to watch 16 million movies, or, on an even less plausible note, travel back and forth to the moon 225,000 times.
“Skype has been growing in its number of minutes at double digit rate for a steady time,” Steele said. “The number of mobile users continues to grow at a very strong rate too, not just from the desktop but other devices, as well.”
Steele concurs that two billion minutes a day is “a lot,” but has every reason to think the company will amass more minutes in the future.
A month ago, Skype united with Windows Live messenger for an upgrade on Windows slated for April 8. Skype anticipates huge turnout from the development.
“We know more users will come over from Messenger, and since the Skype experience provides multiple ways to communicate — not just via IM — we think we will come to try it out and then discover we have a lot of other features,” Steele said, noting that such has been the trend for Skype users throughout the years.
Though Skype today takes the crown today for its whopping time sucking success, the milestone also speaks to how well-embraced VoIP services are in general, and how valuable they are on a day-to-day basis.
