SKYPE News - XCast Labs Enables BlackBerry Devices to Receive Video Messages

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

XCast Labs has brought its IP videomail services to BlackBerry (News - Alert) devices. With this new service available for the BlackBerry Curve, Pearl or Storm, users will be able to receive video messages from friends, family or colleagues who have a videophone or Softphone application.

XCast Labs claims it is an advanced SaaS (News - Alert) (Software as a Service) provider that has developed a comprehensive suite of software and hardware solutions that enable Cable MSOs / PCOs, CLECs, RLECs, ISPs, MDUs, resellers and marketing companies to offer integrated IP-based services to their end-users.

BlackBerry devices can also make use of XCast’s (News - Alert) traditional voicemail either as an MP3 attachment to email or via RSS feed.

The company’s Digital Voice & Video (DV&V) platform is a suite of fully hosted communications services that can be easily customized and private-labeled. Service providers or cable operators can easily and cost effectively integrate high quality video and voice services either as a standalone service or to complete their triple play offering.

XCast Labs CEO Cliff Rees (News - Alert) said in a release that for videomail, the XCast server analyzes the Blackberry firmware and type of device. It then automatically provides a link to videomail that corresponds to the particular device model and firmware from which the request was generated.

Rees added that integrating their video functionality with Blackberry devices is a breakthrough for XCast as they plan to expand their worldwide reach and evolve in accordance to the changing communications landscape. Since the advent of mobile computing, the BlackBerry has been recognized as the PDA of choice for corporate end-users. With continued consumer adoption and migration to these and other smartphones, XCast users will have access to the highest quality video messaging.

Cable operators, telcos, and other service providers would welcome any technology that enables to add video telephony, video conferencing, and other video services to their voice offerings.

XCast Labs has stated that their expertise in both IP and traditional telecom has empowered them to develop a technology that delivers a wide variety of fully integrated, reliable and scalable services at a much lower cost than other offerings.

XCast Labs recently achieved interoperability with Skype (News - Alert).
